Rookie goes for 6 in a row @ Ironman UK Week 4/25
So I booked a day off work on Friday and went and did a lap of the Ironman UK bike circuit for the first time in over 6 months……
It was quite possibly the worst cycling experience of my life….
Why?
I’ll tell you for why…..
Down in the village it seemed a relatively nice day…..
“Cracking day for a loop” I said to myself and strapped the bike to the back of the car all excited….
But once you got up onto the tops of the brutally exposed Ironman bike circuit, all hell was breaking loose…..
About an hour into the ride, The skies turned black, the temperatures dropped to minus 10, the wind cranked up to gale force and I got pummelled by hailstones the size of golf balls throughout……
Trying to cycle up past entwistle reservoir in such conditions (which feels like trying to cycle uphill through treacle at the best of times) was the dictionary definition of cycling hell…..
Being absolutely battered on the wide open section past delph sailing club was nothing short of horrendous…..
Sheephouse to finish in sub zero galeforce winds was enough to send even the toughest of Ironmen over the edge….
All the while we try and dodge the potholes on a truly dogshit road surface….
I swear someone was taking the piss out of me today….
I couldn’t feel me feet for about 2 hours after…..
Before I set off, I had a look back over my efforts on this loop last year…..
1:48 I got my lap time down to……
Do you know how long it took me today?
2:52….. www.strava.com/activities/6639012908
Pathetic…..
and a certain DNF…..
How much of that is down to the elements and how much of that is down to the damage I have done to my fitness by abusing my body for the last 6 months whilst turning into a fat bastard in the process……
Time will only tell……
“It’s rides like this that put the hairs on your chest” an Ironman once said to me……
You can stick it up your arse mate…..
I’m off to bed……
