Rookie goes for 5 in a row @ Ironman UK week 3 of 26
Areet?
So I’ve seen a few posts recently from people saying they are unable to train for Ironman because all the gyms are closed and the pools are shut….
Sorry, but i’m not having that….
The biggest thing I learnt from the Ironmen is that they never complain about anything….
They count their blessings, be grateful for what they’ve got and make the most of what they have….
It’s like i said the other week….
We still have our bikes…
And we’ve still got our trainers….
Get on with it…..
Thousands of poor souls have been struck down with the virus and here’s you threatening to cancel your golden Ironman ticket because you can’t go the pool….
Have a word with yourself lad….
Sure, the swim situation is not exactly ideal at present, but who the hell wants to go for an open water swim when it’s minus 7 outside???
Not me….
Fuck That….
The swimming can wait until it’s much much warmer thanks……
Fair enough if you are training for Kona or something (although i’m sure those boys have ‘found a way’)….
And first timers, I feel your pain, I really do….
But you already mastered the open water swim element when you conquered the 70.3 didn’t you?….. (you’ve read my book….right???)
I’ve said it a million times…..
Ironman should not be your first experience of open water swimming……
It’s as simple as that…..
Besides, the pools will be open again before you know it….
In the meantime, get yer trainers on son, or better still, get on yer bike and start grinding up some mountains in preparation for Bolton!!!
Anyway, all this noise about can’t train/can train….
It got me to thinking….
Are we overlooking a silver bullet here?
Let me explain…..
I currently weigh 15 stone 9
That’s in excess of 3 stone over ‘peak’…..
I would argue that even if I did absolutely no training whatsoever for the next 3 months but managed to lose 3 stone of lard, that would do more for my Ironman survival chances than any training plan, I don’t care how good it is…..
And we don’t need a gym to sort that, we just need to control what we are stuffing into our mouths on a daily basis….
If you are in any doubt about what I am saying here then try this – on your next bike ride, find the biggest hill you can and strap a 12kg bag of spuds to your back then go cycle up it….
When you get to the top, (wheezing) return to the bottom and remove the bag of spuds….
Then cycle back up it again and tell me which one you found easier….
It really is a no brainer as far as I’m concerned and I reckon thousands of age groupers are in a similar boat on the ‘excess timber’ front right now……
‘Food’ for thought……
PS you’ll be pleased to know I have actually started doing some work (training) this week – It’s something very specific – I’ll let you know what it is next week!
